Hayley Newman was born in Guildford, Surrey and lives in London. She has been making performance work for over 20 years.
She received a BA from Middlesex University before gaining a Higher Diploma in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1995 she took up a DAAD scholarship in the class of Marina Abramović at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg and completed her PhD at the University of Leeds in 2001. She teaches at Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.
She has performed and exhibited widely and has had solo shows at Matt’s Gallery, London; The Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; The Longside Gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva. Her work has been seen in group exhibitions at Kunstmuseum, Lucerne; Montevideo, Amsterdam; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago and Tate Modern, London.
She is interested in ecology, music, subjectivity, fiction, memory and the document. Her commitment to working creatively around the current economic, social and ecological crises forged The Gluts (Hayley Newman, Gina Birch and Kaffe Matthews) and their eco-electro musical Café Carbon, which they took to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009.
She is currently writing the novella Common, based on her experiences as ‘Self-appointed Artist in Residence’ in The City of London. The book will be published by Copy Press in 2012.
